Williams Interactive started out producing land-based pinball back in the 1950s in America. The company took its name from its creator, Harry Williams, a certified engineer who invented one of the mechanisms of the machine.
In the very beginning the firm was called Williams Electronic Manufacturing Company, and it managed to set a few records, such as selling around 2,000 units of one of its creations – Skill Pool – across the United States. One undoubted hit, though, was released later: The Iconic Defender, created in the 1980s, became well known among customers, and its unique features hugely influenced the development of later produced arcades.
With several acquisitions under its belt, in 1987 the studio emerged as the WMS Industries that we know today. By the beginning of the new millennium it had shut down production of pinball machines, and switched to creating slots. Around this time, it also acquired Bally/Midway, and launched video game production.
As the world of online gaming evolved, the manufacturer turned its popular machines into virtual ones and also started developing new content. The company turned the industry upside down, introducing Reel’em In in 1996, and proving that there could be far more to slots than simple fruits and cards. The release also featured several lines, and the possibility to bet multiple coins per line. This success was followed by the release of another hit, the Jackpot Party.
During these years, WMS also had several effective co-working experiences. Collaboration with IGT led to the creation of a unique software solution called GSA. The 2012 partnership with Large Animal Games resulted in a highly popular Facebook app, “Lucky Cruise”. In 2013 Williams Interactive merged with Scientific Games.
