Legal Status for Spanish Players and Casinos
Spain went down a long road to fully legalizing online gambling. The first legit land-based venues appeared here in 1977. By 2011, there have been solid changes in laws that regulate the online industry. However, while most gambling activities were approved by the lawmakers by 2012, it was not until 2014 that the operators could also offer slot machines to their customers.
All websites that intend to offer games of chance to the Spanish players need to apply for an online casino gambling license. The process is regulated by the Law 13/2011, and the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego is in charge of the process.
Since the Law has been passed, the government issued over fifty licenses for gaming and Sportsbook websites. Looks like the country is all in for supporting the industry, and the Ministry of Finances has even cut the gambling tax from 25% to 20%. Experts predict this move will help the market grow by 1,5 billion Euros by the end of 2025.
In addition to supporting the in-country online operators, the Law also allows for international brands to offer services to players. However, these companies need to apply for and receive a local license. Unlike in Austria, international companies do not need to have a physical presence in Spain, which allowed such popular providers as GiG to enter the market. Among some other reputable names that we can mention, there is Intertops and PartyCasino.
While this makes Spain a very liberal gambling site, it is not recommended to play at non-certified websites and using VPNs will not be helpful. Players turning to uncertified services may be facing major fines.
