Western Australia is set to introduce a major regulatory change to curb gambling addiction at Crown Perth Casino. Following a key recommendation from the Perth Casino Royal Commission, mandatory carded play will be rolled out for all electronic gaming machines starting December 1. This initiative represents a significant step towards reducing the risk of gambling harm.
From the start date, all patrons using electronic gaming machines will be required to use a personalized membership card. This card, which is linked to the player’s account, automatically enforces strict limits: a maximum of 12 hours of play per day and 28 hours per week. It will also trigger mandatory breaks every three hours.
This new system provides powerful new controls for casinos players Australia, granting them greater awareness of their activity. While players can set their own loss limits within the regulatory caps, any request to increase a limit will only take effect after a seven-day cooling-off period. Conversely, requests to immediately decrease loss limits will be applied instantly.
The system is designed to provide comprehensive support. It includes on-screen tracking and sends monthly activity statements, helping players monitor their spending. Crucially, the system also empowers the casino to identify patterns of risky behaviour, allowing staff to intervene and offer support when needed. This focus on preventative intervention is a core element of the overall strategy. The introduction of this mandatory system of carded play is seen as a major success in fulfilling the gaming helps and supports mandate that arose from the Royal Commission's findings.
Previously, we detailed Ukraine's adoption of Mandatory Gambling Limits. This measure, a first for the country, introduces financial and time controls for gamblers, mirroring successful player protection strategies used in the EU and Canada.
