UKGC Mandates New Deposit Limits to Boost Player Control

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has announced a significant tightening of rules regarding financial controls, aiming to give customers greater power to manage their spending. These new regulations will focus on standardizing how financial limits are offered and communicated by online gambling operators, ensuring consistency and clarity for all users.

A core change is set to take effect from June 30, 2026. From this date, all online gambling businesses must provide customers with a facility to set a clear “deposit limit.” Crucially, this specific limit must be based solely on the total amount of money a customer transfers into their account over a chosen period. To eliminate confusion, the UKGC mandates that only this form of control may be labelled a “deposit limit.” While businesses can still offer other tools, like loss limits or limits that factor in withdrawals, they cannot be called a "deposit limit," thereby simplifying the choice for consumers.

This upcoming change builds upon a previously announced set of improvements that will first come into force on October 31, 2025. These earlier rules require all gambling businesses to immediately enhance the availability and functionality of spending controls for online casino players in the United Kingdom.

Key requirements from the October 2025 milestone include:

  • Prompting customers to set a financial limit before they make their first deposit and making it straightforward to change or review that limit later.

  • Sending customers a reminder every six months to review their account and transaction data, which helps them maintain control over their gambling spend.

  • Offering financial limit setting facilities that use free text and are applied at an account level, allowing customers to set genuinely meaningful budgets.

  • Ensuring the limit-setting facilities are clearly visible and easily accessible via a link on the homepage and deposit pages, minimizing the number of clicks required to reach them.

  • Actioning any customer request to decrease a financial limit immediately.

These phased improvements are designed to increase consumer empowerment across the board. The UKGC’s introduction of the standardized "deposit limit" for all online casinos licensed in the United Kingdom is a clear move to simplify financial management tools, giving consumers a more straightforward way to budget and stick to their chosen spend levels.

Helen Rhodes, Commission Director of Major Policy Projects, emphasized the benefit of these changes. “Our work will help empower consumers to have greater awareness and control over their gambling. These further changes will also bring consistency and clarity for those consumers choosing to set deposit limits, while still supporting gambling businesses to offer customer choice for different forms of limits.”
