Kingmaker Megaways Slot Machine: Are You Excited to Try 16,807 Ways to Win Mechanics?

Released in August 2019, the title is a video slot developed by Big Time Gaming. The company is one of the smaller outfits around and it’s also one of the newest. As with many of the younger labels, it was conceived by employees of other firms in the same industry – Nik Robinson, Huw McIntosh, and Ian Schmidt. The producer is based in Sydney, in what it calls the ‘creative hub’ of the city in Surry Hills.

Big Time Gaming produces and releases casino games and slots on its own and also partners up with the respected gaming providers and platforms such as Microgaming's Quickfire, Leander Games, OpenBet and GTS. A deal with Core Gaming has enabled Big Time to quickly convert its games into mobile HTML versions.

Take a Trip to the Kingdom

Despite the name, the game does not actually feature any kings, queens, princesses, or even a lowly peasant. In terms of visual presentation, the backdrop is designed to look like a scene taken straight from the movie The Sound of Music where you will see a medieval kingdom at the foot of a snow-capped mountain range, complete with a calm lake and gorgeous green landscape.

The gameboard sits center screen and resembles a royal banner. The reels on which the symbols sit is clear with patterned lattice, designed to resemble the glass windows in the palace beyond. To the left of the gameboard are four colored flags each with a different symbol matching the colored gemstones found among the game’s symbols.

Instead of royalty on the reels, the King Maker slot machine uses the 9 through to A playing card symbols, along with four special gems. These gems are embellished with stylized creatures, such as a two-headed snake, a griffin, a minotaur, and a bat. Flags representing each of these characters wave gently in the breeze. Each symbol brightens up the reels with dazzling colors, helping them to stand out against the stained-glass backdrop.

Paytable Explained

The game comes with five reels, as opposed to the six-reel setup. With the Megaways system, you win by landing three or more matching symbols from left to right on consecutive reels, starting from the left side. That is nothing unusual, but the real difference lies in that each reel can hold between two large symbols to seven tiny ones. The largest possible number of ways to win, therefore, would be if seven symbols landed on each reel which would result in 16,807 (7x7x7x7x7) Megaways.

The slot machine is aimed at low- to mid-stakes gamblers, with a maximum bet of just 20.00 per spin. You can wager as little as 0.20 and, of course, there are numerous options in between these limits.

Other control options include an Auto mode. You can decide how many spins to activate and set cut-off limits that will pause them when you win or lose a certain amount.

The RTP (Return to a Player ratio) is 96.65%, and during our review we found that the online slot had medium volatility.

Special Icons

  • A multicolored Wild symbol helps out, acting as any playing card or gem to complete combinations, although it is not worth anything on its own.
  • You will also find that the slot machine features a Scatter symbol. This image of a slowly spinning Gold Crown pays in any place, not just when you see it on adjacent reels. The scatter is also the highest-paying symbol, rewarding you with 4x, 20x, or 250x your stake when landing in three, four, or five places at once. As soon as you collect the prize for the Scatter icon, you are awarded Bonus Spins, depending on how many crowns appeared in the triggering spin.

Regular Symbols

  • There are four different colored gemstones –each having an emblem on them. Purple Dragons can let you pick up to 10x your wager for five of them.
  • A Red Minotaur pictogram is worth up to 0.7x for five matching pictograms.
  • A Blue Griffin will award you 0.6x your wager for collecting five of them.
  • If five Green Double-Headed Snake characters appear on the reels, your bankroll will be increased by 0.5x your stake.
  • Big Time Gaming included six card-rank symbols for the low-tier pays in this game. If five Ace and King images land anywhere on the screen, you will be awarded a maximum of 0.4x your wager.
  • Queen and Jack get you 0.35x for five, and five Tens and Nines are worth 0.3x your bet.

Bonuses and Additional Winning Possibilities

The pokie comes with a Gem Multipliers feature – each banner to the left of the reel set starts at 1x and gets a 1+ boost every time you land a 5 of a kind gemstone combination. If you were to form a five of a kind win with the purple gem, the multiplier would increase by 1 to 2x – and so on.

It all comes together in the Bonus Spins game, which is played when three, four, or five King's Crown Scatter symbols appear in view simultaneously - this will give you seven, twelve or twenty bonus spins respectively. Once in, you are now transferred to a treasure chamber where the combined total of all the gem multipliers collected during the base game, is now your starting win multiplier.

You may also benefit from a fully expanded reel set on every spin, and just like in the base game, every five of a kind gemstone win will boost the multiplier by 1. Moreover, another seven, twelve or twenty bonus spins will be added to your total if you land three, four, or five scatters. Highly volatile, there is potential for wins well over 10,000x your stake in the bonus spins level.
