Legal Status for Czech Players and Casinos
Unlike many of its European neighbors that stuck to banning gambling altogether for the longest period, the Czech Republic was among those few countries where games of chance were allowed. In the 50s, a few brick and mortar casinos even managed to gain leadership of the local industry and to become the go-to places. Sazka SA was the flagman founded in the 50s. Sportsbooks had to receive local licensing to continue to run services. Amendments of 2012 only added to a set of restrictions and chased the industry into a deeper dead-end.
By 2016, the discussion was raised to liberalize the laws and to allow for more freedom for the local casino businesses. This was particularly necessary considering the fact that while the local online operators had to officially apply for the local licensing and to pay a hefty fee and to submit to taxation,offshore casinos had free access to the Czech gaming community, and delivered their services without any obligations to pay any fees or taxes.
